Goal
Discovery is the point of CMUCal. A short "Events you might like" list helps students find things outside their usual circles.

Current state

  • Tags exist (tags, event_tags; GET /api/events/tags, GET /api/events/<id>/tags). Only manual and iCal events get tags; scrapers do not set any.
  • Usable signals: user_saved_events, the orgs in a user's schedules, and the categories of saved events.

Scope

  • Start simple and explainable: upcoming events from orgs, tags and categories similar to what the user saved or follows, plus popular events (most saves) as a fallback.
  • GET /api/events/recommended (signed in only), with a limit and a date window.
  • Give scraped events basic tags or categories so there is something to match on.
  • A "You might like" section on Explore with a short reason ("because you saved X").
  • Track clicks and saves in PostHog to see whether it helps.

Done when

  • Signed-in users with a few saves see relevant upcoming events, and new users see popular ones.

Notes
After the Spring launch. Needs real usage data first.
